Description
Photographic artwork by Dawn Currie. Pastel portrait of a Roseate Spoonbill photographed in Brevard County, FL. Companion pieces Spoonbill Portrait I and II may be displayed individually or together to enhance your decor.
Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja): The Spoonbill's bright pink coloring leads many Florida tourists to think they have seen a flamingo, but take a closer look and you'll notice an unusually shaped bill that makes this wading bird quite distinctive. The Roseate Spoonbill uses its odd bill to strain small food items out of the water. They feeds while wading in shallow water, sweeping their bill back and forth. Sensitive nerve endings snap bill shut when prey is found.
Resident in southern Florida, throughout the Caribbean, and along the Pacific Coast of Mexico south and along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Yucatan Peninsula. Preferred habitats include mangroves, saltwater lagoons, and large, shallow lakes.
I enjoy watching and photographing these birds in my favorite Brevard County birding locations including Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Titusville Florida, the TM Goodwin Waterfowl Management are near Fellsmere Florida, and the Click Ponds of Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands near Viera Florida.
