Description
From Florida Birds Collection by artist Dawn Currie. An American Bald Eagle perched high in a tree surveying his territory - the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge near Melbourne Beach Florida. The strong lines of the bare branches and striking white and brown feathers of the eagle stand out boldly against the pure blue Florida sky.

American Bald Eagle (haliaeetus leucocephalus): The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. These regal birds aren't really bald, but their white-feathered heads gleam in contrast to their chocolate-brown body and wings. Look for them soaring in solitude, chasing other birds for their food, or gathering by the hundreds in winter. Once endangered, Bald Eagles have flourished under protection.
Eagles are often found perched on a tall, mature coniferous or deciduous trees that afford a wide view of the surroundings. From this vantage point the Eagle can survey his territory for both food and intruders.
