"Beauty From Above" wildlife photograph by Dawn Currie. Most instructors will tell you not to take photographs of a bird's back, but there are reasons to break every 'rule' - this is one of them. Photographed in flight at this angle, it is possible to see the beautiful feather pattern of the Ring-billed Gull. This beautiful bird was enjoying the afternoon breeze at Sebastian Inlet State Park, FL.
Gulls love to winter here in central Florida. According to Cornell University, migrating Ring-billed Gulls apparently use a built-in compass to navigate. When tested at only two days of age, chicks showed a preference for magnetic bearings that would take them in the appropriate direction for their fall migration. The gulls also rely on landmarks and high-altitude winds to provide directional cues.
