Wildlife photography by Dawn Currie. Inconspicuous little Savannah Sparrow caught with his mouth full foraging in the wild grasses along the shores of the Viera Wetlands. Very quick and preferring thick grass, these little guys are hard to photograph. Sometimes it works out!
Not all streaky little brown birds are impossible to identify. Take a closer look and you'll see an understated by distinctive yellow spot on the front of the 'eyebrow' stripe. Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) are one of the most numerous songbirds in North America. In summer, they don't hesitate to advertise their location, belting out a loud, insect-like song from farm fields and grasslands.
