Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitusv): A treetop hunter of deciduous forests and suburban areas, the Great Crested Flycatcher is easier to hear than to see. The only eastern flycatcher that nests in cavities, it often includes snakeskin in the nest lining. They spend very little time on the ground, and do not hop or walk. They prefer to fly from place to place on the ground rather than walk. Diets of the Great Crested Flycatcher consist of fruits and berries, and insects caught mid-flight.
The Great Crested Flycatcher is found throughout eastern and mid-western areas of North America. In winter months, this species migrates south to Mexico, South America, Florida and Cuba. I have observed and photographed them most often in the Pelican Island National Wildlife Sanctuary and Sebastian Inlet State Park near Melbourne Beach Florida.
