Description
Photographic artwork of Cuba by Dawn Currie. Havana's Capitol is the central point from which visitors get their bearings for the rest of the city. Hounded by a gauntlet of hawkers and beggars, a visitor's first impressions can be overwhelming. It is like stepping back in time with pre-1959 vehicles of all shapes and colors traversing the main street and looking for fares. The facades of the buildings are resplendent with color and character. A closer look reveals this beauty is only skin deep. Behind the facades facing the Capitol are buildings ravaged by passing hurricanes and crumbling from decades of neglect.
Simply step down one of the adjacent streets and look back to see a sad and shocking view of tenements marching up to the steps of the Capitol. Unlike poor areas seen in rest of the country, what is left does not appear to be as well cared for, and trash is apparent for the first time on the journey.
