Description
Photographic digital art by Dawn Currie. Created from one of my original photographs, the detail of this colorful male Painted Bunting is enhanced through digital processing and drawing techniques. I photographed this stunning Painted Bunting near the Visitor Center at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville Florida in late March. He was spending a lot of time near the feeders, making it somewhat easier to capture a photograph of him (until the squirrels showed up and chased him away).
The Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris) is a species of bird in the cardinal family that is native to North America. The bright plumage of the male only comes in the second year of life; in the first year they can only be distinguished from the female by close inspection.

Special Edition Art Collection inspired by John James Audubon and others that have depicted the beauty of birds through drawings and illustrations, I have been working on a process to transform my photographs into drawings for over a decade. The result is reminiscent of pen and ink drawings and stippling techniques. These detailed images highlight the timeless beauty of these birds.
