Photographic artwork by Dawn Currie – Portrait of a Short-tailed Hawk, part of Winged Ambassadors Portfolio. This portfolio is in honor of our Winged Ambassadors, rescued birds that must remain in captivity due to injuries or imprinting on humans. Now they serve to educate the public regarding what we can do to protect our wildlife. As a nature photographer and wildlife rehab volunteer, these birds hold a special place in my heart. Completed as a fundraiser, I strove to capture portraits that celebrated their unique beauty. A portion of all proceeds will go to the Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary in Palm Shores, Florida and to the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida.

Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus): Small hawk of grass and woodland habitat in Florida. Occurs in two color morphs: Dark morph adult (like the one pictured) is uniformly dark brown with thin dark bands on a dull white tail. In flight shows white flight feathers with thin dark bands and dark wingtips. The light morph has white underparts.

The Short-tailed Hawk is a rare bird in Florida, although it is not on the Endangered Species list. The bird’s range also includes central Mexico south to the Andes and Chile.
