I found Momma Muscovy and her chicks along the banks of the pond in Wells Park near the library in Melbourne Florida. They didn't seem to be concerned about my photographing them as long as I kept my distance.
Domestic duck breeds are not illustrated in most field guides, and the older guides did not mention this problem at all. First rule of thumb: If your weird duck is found at a park, walking around on the grass or coming near people, it is probably a domestic duck. Only two species of ducks have been domesticated: the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and the Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata).
The most obvious character of a Muscovy is the red facial skin. The wild type plumage of Muscovy is all black, glossy greenish on the back, and with large white wing patches. But, because of our fondness for white, domestic Muscovy can be pure white, all black, or any degree of pied black-and-white.
Wild Muscovy ducks are native to Mexico, Central, and South America. The domestic breed, Cairina moschata forma domestica, is commonly known in Spanish as the pato criollo ("creole duck"). They have been bred since pre-Columbian times by Native Americans and are heavier and less able to fly long distances than the wild subspecies. Their plumage color are also more variable. Other names for the domestic breed in Spanish are pato casero ("backyard duck") and pato mudo ("mute duck").
