Description
Photographic artwork of Cuba by Dawn Currie. In Santiago de Cuba's harbor is Granma Island, named after the boat which brought Fidel Castro and his band of revolutionaries back to Cuba. Not the usual tourist destination, it can be accessed by ferry across the bay to the sole restaurant on the island. If one adventures beyond the restaurant, the true living conditions and spirit of this place unfold.
In the intense sun of midday the locals look out of windows open to the breeze or relax in the shade provided by porches or trees. Gracious and warm; they welcome visitors into their humble homes.
They are proud of what they have, taking every care to keep things spotless and in working order. Despite bare floors and sections of roof missing thanks to a passing hurricane, they find richness in family and sharing stories. The only signs of the modern world may be a television or hot plate in the kitchen.
