Cool facts from Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Great Blue Herons in the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada have benefited from the recovery of beaver populations, which have created a patchwork of swamps and meadows well-suited to foraging and nesting. And thanks to specially shaped neck vertebrae, Great Blue Herons can quickly strike prey at a distance.
These can be quite a lot to handle for wildlife rehabilitaters. At the hospital I volunteer at, we have great respect for both beak and talons. Safety precautions are taken for the safety of both the bird and the handlers.
