Description
Photographic artwork by Dawn Currie – Portrait of a Great Horned Owl, part of Winged Ambassadors Portfolio. This portfolio is in honor of our Winged Ambassadors, rescued birds that must remain in captivity due to injuries or imprinting on humans. Now they serve to educate the public regarding what we can do to protect our wildlife. As a nature photographer and wildlife rehab volunteer, these birds hold a special place in my heart. Completed as a fundraiser, I strove to capture portraits that celebrated their unique beauty. A portion of all proceeds will go to the Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary in Palm Shores, Florida and to the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida.

Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus): The Great Horned Owl is native to and the most widespread owl species throughout the Americas. With its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow-eyed stare, and deep hooting voice, the Great Horned Owl is the quintessential owl of storybooks. This powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs. Great Horned owls are equally at home in deserts, wetlands, forests, grasslands, backyards, cities, and almost any other semi-open habitat between the Arctic and the tropics. Once this bird finds a mate, it becomes a permanent resident in its territory.
