Description
From Florida Birds Collection by artist Dawn Currie. A small warbler of the upper canopy, the Northern Parula (Setophaga americana) can be found in two rather distinct populations. The southern population nests primarily in hanging Spanish moss, while the northern population uses the similar-looking old man's beard lichen. This Northern Parula was photographed in Turkey Creek Sanctuary during the Spring migration.

Northern Parula is a small, compact warbler with blue-gray upperparts and bronze-green back patch. Throat and breast are yellow, belly and undertail coverts are white. White eye-ring is broken. Wings are blue-gray with two white bars. It breeds from southeastern Canada to the Gulf coast and winters from southern Florida southward into the tropics, including the West Indies and southern portions of Mexico. Preferred breeding habitat includes wet, chiefly coniferous woods, in swamps, and along lakes and ponds. More widespread during migration.
As part of the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) program and the East Florida section of the Great Florida Birding Trail, Turkey Creek Sanctuary is 130 acres of wonder, biodiversity and natural resources. Established in 1981, the Sanctuary offers a 1.85 mile boardwalk passing through hydric (wet) hammock, mesic (moist) hammock, and sand pine scrub communities, and 1.5 miles of jogging trails through native forest, both excellent for viewing a multitude of wild life
