Photographic artwork by Dawn Currie. Glossy Ibis flying over Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Titusville, Florida.
Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus): A dark iridescent wading bird with a long, down-curved bill. When flying, they alternate several shallow rapid wing beats and short glides. Glossy Ibis in North America lives primarily along the Atlantic Coast; occasionally they also can be found in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Birding enthusiasts find they are most common in marshes and wetlands along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts; though they occasionally wander inland. I have observed and photographed them in a number of wetlands in Brevard and Indian River Counties. Some of my favorite spots include the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands in Viera Florida, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville Florida, and the Orlando Wetlands in Christmas Florida.
