Artist's Description
"Pelican Glide," a photographic artwork by Dawn Currie. Captured gliding along the surf off Sebastian Inlet, this solitary adult Brown Pelican appears to be totally at peace.
I love watching Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) as they skim the surf or soar overhead. Brown Pelicans fly close to the water, as do other birds, to take advantage of a concept of physics called the ground effect, or sometimes compression gliding. Basically, as the bird glides over the water the air is “funneled” between the lower surfaces of the wings and the upper surface of the water. The air is thereby compressed and functions like a cushion of dense air that supports the bird aloft, in addition to the normal aerodynamic forces at work. As the bird nears the water surface, the ground effect becomes stronger.
