The male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is a perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style: a shade of red you can’t take your eyes off. Cardinals don’t migrate and they don’t molt into a dull plumage, so they’re still breathtaking year-round.
A perennial favorite among people, the Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states - Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky.
