The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) is a large bird that is about three feet in length. It has a a long S-shaped neck and a long pointed bill. It has large wings with silver-white feathers on the top side. The male has grayish-black feathers with a greenish shine to them. The female has a tan head, neck, and chest, and a black stomach. Both the male and the female have long, fan-shaped tail feathers. When the Anhinga is in its breeding plumage it has a blue ring around its eyes.
According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the male begins nest construction before it has a mate, by placing large sticks and green material in the forks of trees. The male collects nearly all nesting the material, and the female then finishes building nest. The nest is a bulky platform of sticks, somewhat more compact than heron nests. With age, excrement can build up on the outer rim of the nest giving it a white appearance.
