Photographic artwork by Dawn Currie – Portrait of a Red-Shouldered Hawk, part of Winged Ambassadors Portfolio. This portfolio is in honor of our Winged Ambassadors, rescued birds that must remain in captivity due to injuries or imprinting on humans. Now they serve to educate the public regarding what we can do to protect our wildlife. As a nature photographer and wildlife rehab volunteer, these birds hold a special place in my heart. Completed as a fundraiser, I strove to capture portraits that celebrated their unique beauty. A portion of all proceeds will go to the Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary in Palm Shores, Florida and to the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida.

Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus): Whether wheeling over a swamp forest or whistling plaintively from a riverine park, a Red-shouldered Hawk is typically a sign of tall woods and water. It's one of our most distinctively marked common hawks, with barred reddish-peachy underparts and a strongly banded tail. They are the noisiest of the hawks, especially during spring courtship. A perch-hunter of the forest, it feeds on frogs, snakes, lizards, and small mammals.
